How to Propagate “Chain of” or “String of” plants

Chain of Hearts, String of Pearls, String of Bananas and String of Turtles are all trailing plants that are highly popular among indoor plant enthusiasts for their unique appearance and ease of care.

All of these plants are easy to propagate and can quickly become a beautiful addition to any indoor plant collection. They're great for hanging baskets or trailing down shelves, and their unique appearance is sure to catch the eye of any plant lover. With proper care, these plants can live for many years and continue to grow and produce new vines.

Propagation of Chain and String plants can be done using two different methods - stem cuttings and laying the strand on the soil method. Let's take a closer look at each method and how to do it:

Propagation by stem cuttings:

  1. Choose a healthy, mature vine with several leaves.
  2. Using clean scissors or pruning shears, cut the vine at the point where you want to create a new plant. Make sure the cutting is at least a few inches long and has several leaves on it.
  3. Remove the bottom few leaves from the cutting to create a bare stem.
  4. Place the cutting in a small pot or container filled with well-draining soil. Make sure the cut end of the cutting is inserted into the soil.
  5. Water the cutting until the soil is moist but not soaked. Place the pot in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight.
  6. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. After a few weeks, check for root growth by gently tugging on the cutting. If you feel resistance, the cutting has developed roots and can be watered as you would a mature plant.
  7. Once the new plant has developed a strong root system, it can be transplanted into a larger pot or hung in a basket.

Propagation by laying the strand on the soil method:

  1. Locate a healthy, mature vine on your plant.
  2. Gently remove any leaves or vines that are touching the soil, to prevent them from rooting instead of the strand you want to propagate.
  3. Place a small pot or container filled with well-draining soil next to the plant.
  4. Using clean scissors or pruning shears, make a small notch or shallow cut in the vine where it will come into contact with the soil. This will help the vine to develop roots more easily.
  5. Gently bend the notched section of the vine down to the soil and press it into the soil, making sure that the notched section is in contact with the soil.
  6. Use a small stake or piece of wire to hold the vine in place, if necessary.
  7. Water the soil around the newly laid strand, making sure that it is moist but not waterlogged.
  8. Place the pot in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight.
  9. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. After a few weeks, check for root growth by gently tugging on the strand. If you feel resistance, the strand has developed roots and can be watered as you would a mature plant.
  10. Once the strand has developed a strong root system, it can be transplanted into a larger pot or hung in a basket.
